About Mike Downey

I love to build things. Fortunately, I've been able to make building things my career. Most of those things have been in the form of software. Software for creative professionals, developers, media companies, enterprises, sports leagues, athletes and coaches. Most of that software has involved using machine learning and artificial intelligence to do things that often felt magical. And in my free time, I've built other things: 3D models, furniture, custom parts for classic cars, toys, and... even more software. Building things makes me happy.

Professional Background

At DICK'S Sporting Goods, my role as Sr Director of Product & Design for the Innovation portfolio has been instrumental in creating AI-driven products and agents. Our team's dedication to leveraging the latest breakthroughs in generative AI enables us to revolutionize how athletes improve their performance. We've successfully developed growth businesses centered on this technological advancement, solidifying our position as innovators in the retail and sports industry.

At DICK's my team has been building an AI-driven platform to help athletes improve their performance. I can't share any details yet because it's super secret - but it will be unveiled to the world soon!

Previously, as a Product Leader at Microsoft, I honed my expertise in product-centric development and building empowered product teams. My focus on outcome-oriented delivery, systems thinking, and continuous discovery shaped our approach to solving complex business problems with our strategic customers. This experience, coupled with my skills in applied AI and customer innovation, underpins the value I bring to creating cutting-edge solutions in the product and design space.

While I get to build sophisticated software for amateur athletes at DICK's, I got to work with the world's top leagues, teams, and professional athletes for most of my time at Microsoft. This included leading the team that developed NBA League Pass with the NBA, the Race Control system that powers NASCAR races, an AI-driven content recommendation system for the PGA TOUR broadcasts, an advanced analytics system for the US Ryder Cup team, a real-time, AI-driven strategy platform for Hendrick Motorsports, several custom applications for the NFL, a fan engagement platform for Real Madrid, a sophisticated engineering platform for Alpine Formula 1, one of the first, large-scale, live event streaming platforms for NBC's coverage of the Olympics, and a long list of other incredible projects.

And before all of the fun problem-solving in sports, I built tools at Adobe that helped creative professionals and application developers create cutting-edge creative content that shaped what the Internet and mobile platforms would become. I even got to be a part of the product teams that enabled the earliest days of streaming video - notably, I was the Product Manager for Flash at the dawn of web video when companies like YouTube sprung up and changed how we would experience video content forever.
